Tenebrae on Holy Wednesday Night (8pm St Pat’s)
On Holy Wednesday Night (5th April), the FSSP Clergy and Holy Name Choir will sing a candlelit Tenebrae at St Patrick’s Church on Grote St. All are welcome.
The great Divine Office of Tenebrae is a combination of the Liturgical Hours of Matins and Lauds.
The tone of the ceremony is a mournful one. The Lamentations of Jeremiah are chanted; Victoria’s poignant harmonised responsories are sung and the candles on the hearse are gradually extinguished. On Good Friday, Christ, the Light of the World is to be put to death; and a resounding ‘strepitus’ or ‘great noise’ at the conclusion of this night’s service reminds all of the confusion, bewilderment (and terror, no doubt, for some) which accompanied the death of Christ.
“Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Return unto the Lord thy God.”
The event is finished.
