About Us

About the Adelaide Latin Mass Community

We are the Traditional Latin Mass Community who are located at the Church of The Holy Name in Stepney, South Australia. With the approval of the Catholic Archbishop of Adelaide, His Grace, Patrick O’Regan, we are served by priests from the Priestly Fraternity of St Peter (FSSP), who here and in other apostolates worldwide offer the faithful celebration of the Latin Mass and Sacraments according to the traditional liturgical books.

Our community is led by chaplain Fr Michael McCaffrey FSSP and assistant priest Fr Thomas Sofatzis FSSP. Fr McCaffrey, the FSSP’s current District Superior for Oceania, has been our chaplain since 2008. Fr Thomas Sofatzis was ordained in August 2020 and has been in Adelaide since his ordination. Holy Mass

Mass is celebrated in the Latin language in the Traditional or “Tridentine” form. The Tridentine Latin Mass is renowned for its reverence and beauty, and has watered and nourished the faith of thousands of Christians for centuries. The ancient Gregorian Chants and renaissance polyphony add a striking quality to the Sung Mass, which is offered on Saturdays and Sundays.

Faith Formation

Education in the Faith is available to all ages. There are weekly Scripture and Catechism classes for adults; a fortnightly Youth Group (ages 8-17) and Young Adults’ Group (ages 18-35); as well as the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd for younger children (ages 3-9). Special catechism lessons are also available for those looking to become Catholic, as well as those preparing for Confirmation and First Holy Communion.

On Tuesdays and Fridays

Eucharistic Adoration

Eucharistic Adoration is held bi-weekly on Tuesdays and Fridays. In addition, on the first Friday of each month, in honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Adoration continues throughout the night and ends with Benediction early on Saturday morning. These moments of quiet prayer before the Lord are particularly loved and appreciated by the community.

Coffee, Pilgrimages & Picnics

Social groups and events

Social groups and events are held regularly. Our weekly morning tea after the 9:15am Sung Mass each Sunday at the Meeting Room (located diagonally across the carpark) is always popular. Parishioners mix and mingle, while children play safely on the playground and within an enclosed gated area. We also have our very own Trad Café (open every second week) which provides snacks and barista-made hot drinks at a small cost. Please join us there for a cuppa and a chat!

In addition, there are many other opportunities for parishioners to come together socially. These include a monthly Young Mothers’ rosary group, Young Fathers’ reading group, Men’s group, Golden Oldies group, and more.  We also host annual pilgrimages, community picnics, a quiz night, a Christmas play and other events.
